With the foundation of the Croatian Musicians' Union (HGU) there was a need for the right information about the activity of the Union, and in February 1994 the first impression of 500 copies was printed. At that time the Status was incident to all significant music events. Over the years, the Status became one of the most important factors on the Croatian music scene. Today, it's published in more than 4.000 copies, and it brings numerous news and interviews, regardless of the musical style or type. Special columnists write about various professional music topics. Content of each issue is based on readers and musicians suggestions, which makes the Status indispensable for everyone who is involved with music industry. The publishing business of the Status includes many other promotional issues, like booklets, guide-books, cassettes, etc. The Croatian Musicians' Union Branches in Rijeka, Split, Ploce, Cakovec, Nova Gradiska regularly report in the magazine sections about their activities across Croatia.
The Status Prize, founded in 1996, is given to the best instrumentalist, thus trying to emphasize the profession of a musician - player. From 1998, besides various categories like guitar-player, bass-player, drummer, keyboard-player, tamburitza-player, etc., a new category for jazz music is introduced through which the best musician is selected by the board of commissioners.
The Status is financed by sponsors and by their advertising. Therefore, it represents some sort of a guide-book of the Croatian music industry. A smaller share of the magazine financing is covered by the Croatian Musicians' Union (HGU).
The Status is gratis and is delivered free of charge to the Union members, publishers, managers, radio-stations, music-shops, and to other participants in the music industry. Last year, the Status crossed the border of Croatia. Sponsorships and advertising come from many countries, Slovenia in particular, and the magazine is delivered to Canada and the USA.
All these things motivate and support us and our work.
We can only hope that in the future the Status will become even better on our mutual satisfaction.
